A kitchen renovation in a Victorian terrace in East London, home to two photographers and their growing family.
The original L-shaped layout proved spatially inefficient, with both the kitchen and dining area feeling confined, with only limited storage for a busy family life. After considering both subtle and bold layout changes, the decision was made to reorient the kitchen to the opposite side of the room, creating a more open space around a large window that frames views of the back garden.
Space-saving measures were key to the redesign. The boiler was relocated to a new exterior lean-to shed, the redundant chimney breast was opened up to accommodate a generous range cooker, and a floor-to-ceiling pantry was tucked discreetly at the end of the attached hallway. Whiteware was integrated at low level to create an open, streamlined space, leaving plenty of room for the couple’s collection of glassware and ceramics, which are elegantly displayed behind fluted glass cupboards at eye level.
Aesthetically, the refreshed kitchen honours the character of the home while complementing the clients' collection of furniture and art. Dark stained oak timber was chosen for the bespoke cabinetry, paired with cast iron handles finished in beeswax, and a heavily textured cast concrete benchtop that adds a tactile, industrial edge to the space.
