A refined and atmospheric showroom and office for jewellery designer Michelle Oh, nestled in a quiet courtyard in Shoreditch, East London. The space seeks to balance proportion and contrast, reflecting a dedication to materiality and form over ornamentation.

Set within an open-plan layout, the space features windows on three sides and a distinctive architecture, including curved walls and a glass block partition. These existing elements were enhanced through thoughtful design choices, employing material contrasts, subtle level changes and custom display furniture to intuitively zone the different functions of the showroom, office, and jewellery workshop.

The design approach was informed by the concept of contrasts – a dialogue between hard and soft materials, matte and glossy finishes, and the blending of modern and vintage elements. The palette features earthy, tactile tones: chalky whites, ecru and sulphur yellow finishes, contrasted by a deep chocolate brown outlining the perimeter of the space and doorways. Accents of metallic silver and blackened steel, with different levels of patina, nod to the crafted finish of the jewellery pieces on display.

A key feature of the design is the use of bespoke display furniture. In the heart of the showroom sits a custom-designed jewellery console, fabricated from blackened steel and scorched, waxed oak, which allows the jewellery pride of place. Smaller, wall-mounted vitrines in brushed aluminium have been designed to highlight special pieces or small collections. Additionally, the studio repurposed existing display elements, including a lockable glass display case, which has been elevated on a custom-made steel pedestal.

The furniture selection is deliberately eclectic, combining contemporary design with vintage finds, creating a salon-like atmosphere — somewhere customers can connect with the brand on a deeper, more intimate level. Sculptural accents, such as a solid teak form and a sailcloth chair, enhance the space’s artistic feel.
