We were asked to design the East London HQ for Clapton Craft, a craft beer and wine retailer with stores across London. With a unique identity – Clapton Craft Depot – the space houses a retail offering, bar and restaurant, as well as somewhere for the team to store, package and dispatch online orders.
The design includes a bar and back bar with 11 taps, with a changing offering serviced from a small cold room behind. Opposite, another large cold room visible to customers gives a glimpse into back-of-house functions and the abundance of product. The fridges and shelving were custom designs in welded steel, left raw, leaning into the industrial charm of the site with its freshly stripped back ceiling and structural columns.
In contrast, the walls were finished in two tones of plaster – a soft putty colour and a deep iron oxide red – which help to soften the space, and also add a richness of colour. Limed oak furniture and canvas upholstery, designed in collaboration with furniture maker Herb Palmer, ensure the front of house seating is inviting and comfortable, in addition to three snug drinking booths along the circulation route towards the back of house storage and office space.
